Job Description

Etsy is seeking a temporary Merchandising Director who is analytical, thorough, creatively-minded and motivated by results to lead, influence and drive inventory strategies to achieve company wide business objectives. Our main objective is to activate Marketing & Merchandising strategies through inventory management and curation that influences the buyer experience onsite and in Marketing channels. You are at the center of what buyers want on Etsy across global categories and your ability to deliver impactful inventory that tells this story powers the work of the marketing team from the very top of the funnel (TV & PR) through to channels (CRM, Social) and onsite. Merchandising steers every item our buyers see on and off Etsy and helps our sellers know what to sell.

You’ll be a crucial member of the Etsy Merchandising Team, playing a key role in departmental planning, overseeing and evolving your team’s progress to define and shape the growth of inventory across global markets. Your desire to demonstrate how data, insights, and innovative-thinking can craft inventory strategy and campaigns that lead to global growth, your ability to understand and unlock global supply & demand trends, and your leadership over an agile performance-driven team that carry your strategies through to market make you a critical leader across the organization.

About the Role

In this role you will:

  • Grow, manage and maintain curated inventory to deliver business impact in response to buyer demand, local market needs and external trends — taking a lead role in driving the evolution of merchandising strategies, including seller assortment and category strategies, pricing strategies, and new product direction.
  • Craft business model scenarios and KPIs through analyzing data and insights, remaining agile to pivoting strategies. 
  • Lead, mentor and advocate for your team of 18+ Merchandisers ensuring team focus and agility on top business priorities, while delivering industry leading results in a fast paced, collaborative environment.
  • Collaborate with Product teams on inventory management internal tool optimizations and enhancements, leading strategic roadmap setting and prioritization.
  • Leverage marketplace data, insights tools and inventory insights to identify top opportunities and deliver ongoing business analysis to inform the executive & senior leadership teams.
  • Assume responsibility for strategic sourcing of merchandised items & sellers for promotion and site merchandising.
  • Partner with cross-functional leaders across Etsy, including Marketing, Research & Analytics and Product on high-impact campaigns and company-wide projects, providing strategic operational guidance and then leading the direct team on execution inventory efforts.
  • Represent Merchandising team across regular cadence of leadership and executive meetings ranging from monthly performance reviews, initiative check-ins and new proposals.
  • Develop and embrace innovation and opportunities which move the company’s merchandising strategy forward.
  • Oversee work of Marketing Enablement, reviewing output and ensuring accuracy of execution, successful positioning, placement of specific Etsy categories of goods, site merchandising and campaign launches.
  • Maintain an awareness of all key team projects and take responsibility for ensuring that they are delivered on time and achieve their objectives.
  • Find innovative ways to enhance team productivity, efficiency, impact & motivation.


About You

  • You are a self-starter who brings significant work experience as a department director or similar position; 10+ years of e-commerce and merchandise planning experience with demonstrated success in inventory management.j
  • You are flexible and lead with optimism while navigating ambiguity and change
  • You have strong team management experience (including hiring and contract management) with proven history as a trusted leader with ability to oversee a team of 10+
  • You are a strong and skilled communicator at every level, transparent and sensitive with your team, even when difficult conversations are required. You earn trust from your peers and leaders by staying acutely aware of their goals, identifying opportunities to align and keeping them informed of progress and roadblocks.
  • You are a creative thinker with the ability to conceptualize and implement ideas that will drive business results.
  • You have strong working knowledge of performance and operations management, and familiarity with industry best practices and merchandising models.
  • You are an organized, efficient, and resourceful self-starting leader with solid problem solving skills and willingness to approach unbounded problems head on and consistently deliver work product that makes valuable contributions beyond the parameters of the instructions you were given.
  • You deliver long term strategic business plans, remaining agile to move quickly and make pivots when priorities evolve or shift.
  • You champion practices to elevate the quality of work throughout your org and inspire your team to evangelize for them.
  • You have good judgment and a distinct ability to source, review, approve and speak to appealing, engaging, and compelling merchandise with deep understanding of shopper audiences and market trends.
